Skilled Volunteers Needed

With recent economic times many Western New Yorkers are finding themselves without work, and while six months off may feel like a vacation, it is not the most flattering period of time on someone’s resume. Have you considered spending this time off refining your skills or learning new ones?
In the past the word “internship” has been associated with the final semester during someone’s college course work. Now, however things have turned around. You too, can be an intern; you do not have to have a college or university affiliation to be considered for an internship.
This is a win, win situation; while the economy is down in the dumps and jobs are few and far between for skilled workers, non profit agencies like AIDS Community Services of Western New York (ACS) are looking for skilled individuals just like you! While interning at ACS you will be learning new skills, gaining valuable work experience that will later help you land that amazing job when the economy finally does turn around. While all of our internships are unpaid, the unique experience you will gain by being a part of the team at ACS will greatly enhance your resume.
We currently are looking for interns in the following fields/positions,
Human Resources Assistant, Medical Filing Assistant, IT Assistant, and a Graphic Designer.
If you or anyone you know are interested in these internship positions please contact Eugene via e-mail at acsvolunteer@yahoo.com or give him a call at 716.332.2286 ext. 335.

Tea Party Planning Committee

Once again the Victorian is a featured spot on the Garden Walk, an annual Buffalo event, taking place this year on July 24 and July 25. Each year ACS’s tea party is a huge success! Everyone who takes part has nothing but wonderful things to say. This event is ran entirety by volunteers and takes a great deal of planning. In order make this years event the most successful one yet, Volunteer Services will host the 1st planning meeting for the event on Monday June 1st, 2009 464 Amherst Street at Gallery 464. If you are interested in being a part of the planning process this year please RSVP to Eugene at 716.332.2268 ext. 335 or via e-mail at acsvolunteer@yahoo.com

5,000 Condom Packets and counting...

Everyone likes to get a little something for the work that they do, so Volunteer Services has made a deal with volunteers that spend their days making condom packets for the Outreach

Program. The goal was to make 5,000 condom
packets. There was no time limit set, just whenever the packets got made, to allow volunteers to set their own pace. The incentive was simple, make 5,000 condom packets and get a pizza party and movie afternoon.

On April 20th the 5,000th condom packet was made! The most amazing part of the story is that the goal was set just five weeks before the goal was reached! Thank you for all of your hard work everyone and keep up the hard work… the next goal will be 10,000!

The pizza party will be by invitation only and the date is TBA.

Spring Spin

Darien Lake’s Spring Spin takes place the weekend of May 30. Spring Spin is a thrifty and fun way to give back to your family and ACS.

Spring Spin tickets are just $19.99 ($10.00 off the normal ticket price), and $5.00 dollars from each ticket sold comes back to ACS.

In addition to getting tickets at an amazing price, you’ll receive a free ticket to return to the park in September. When you purchase your ticket, you also have the option of buying a season pass for an additional $25. Spring Spin tickets are valid from May 29 – May 31, 2009. For tickets or more information, contact Kathy Oczek at extension 331 or at
koczek@aidscommunityservices.com

Thank you!

Volunteers are the lifeblood of AIDS Community Services of Western New York, (ACS). By giving their time and talent, our volunteers ensure that ACS continues to succeed in providing the services that our clients depend on. With more than 1,500 volunteers working with ACS every year, it is important that we thank those who give their time, and we share other opportunities with those who want to give back.

Volunteer positions include offering professional services and programs. ACS provides a comprehensive center for HIV care located in the heart of those communities hardest hit by AIDS. We provide case management, short-term counseling, support groups, alcohol and substance abuse counseling, housing assistance, nutrition services, HIV testing and counseling, community education, library resources, AIDS information line, and other volunteer opportunities.

Thank you to all of those volunteers who give their time and talent to our organization. It is only with your support that we are able to continue to provide medical, supportive and prevention services in a comprehensive model that encourages individuals to take responsibility for their health and quality of life.

As our way of saying thank you for all that you do we would like to invite you to a Barbeque Lunch on May 30th Lakeside at Delaware Park at 1:00 pm just after our AIDS Walk 2009 event.

In order to make sure we have enough food please RSVP by May 21st 2009 via e-mail at acsvolunteer@yahoo.com or give me (Liz O’Dell) a call at 716.332.2286 ext. 371.

Death Toll Rises: ACS Restrats Buddy Program in Response

One of my personal favorite songs was written and performed by Tim McGraw, “Live Like You Were Dying.” This album also titled “Live Like You Were Dying” was released in August of 2004 and the heart wrenching song tells the story of a man in his early forties, with an unspecified, life-threatening disease, and how getting that kind of news can turn your life upside down.

Much like the situations that many of our clients find themselves in. “I asked him when it sank in, that this might really be the real end? How’s it hit you when you get that kind of news?” (‘Live Like You Were Dying’ verse)

Death is scary for anyone to deal with; now imagine if you knew you were going to die but you have no support system to be there with you. It’s a fact of life; we will all die one day. From the moment we are born, we know that we will one day die. We cannot stop it, we cannot postpone it, we have no control of when it will be, but one thing is for sure, it will happen, to everyone. No matter what walk of life, creed, color or sexual orientation, we will all face our mortality.

Have you thought about it? Thought about how you would like to go? For me, if I had the power to choose, I would like to go in my sleep, peacefully, after spending a wonderful evening with my loved ones celebrating life, laughing and telling stories from the past. Sounds wonderful doesn’t it? Well, what if there was no one there to celebrate with me? What if there was no one who even checked in on me, and I went to bed each night wondering, ‘if I died tonight how long would it take for someone to find me?’

We here at AIDS Community Services of Western New York, Inc. believe that no one should have that fear, the fear of being alone in their darkest hour. Sadly, that is the case for many of our clients as of late. The cold, hard truth about our current situation in the HIV/AIDS community is that the death rate of our clients is scarily starting to creep upward again. In response ACS has chosen to restart our Buddy Program.

It’s been a long time since this program has been active so I am going to take a moment to refresh everyone on how the program works.

The mission of The Buddy Program at AIDS Community Services of Western New York, Inc. is to enhance the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and a social support network.

The vision of The Buddy Program: People with HIV/AIDS are often excluded from society because of their status as a HIV/AIDS patient. The Buddy Program is determined to end the social isolation of people with HIV/AIDS by establishing meaningful, lasting one-to-one friendships with their peers who are not HIV positive. These friendships help increase self-esteem and confidence. As well as help the positive Buddy find support in their time of need.

The Buddy Program envisions a world where people with HIV/AIDS will not be societal outcasts and will be accepted and supported through all stages of life and that our current efforts and services will be unnecessary. Until that vision becomes a reality, we will continue to educate students, community members, corporations, and employers about the emotional, functional and natural needs and abilities of people with HIV/AIDS.
The Goals of The Buddy Program: By 2010, The Buddy Program will continue to build on its successful volunteer base in Western New York, further expand its efforts to reach all seven counties of Western New York, and annually engage more than 50 people in the program each year.

The choice is yours; you can make a huge difference in someone’s life with just a simple gesture.

“Like tomorrow was a gift,
And you got eternity,
To think about what you’d do with it.
An' what did you do with it?
An' what can I do with it?
An' what would I do with it?”
